China Airlines to serve ONT

China Airlines will soon offer non-stop passenger service between Ontario International Airport and Taiwan.

Starting next spring, the airline will begin operating its trans-oceanic service between Ontario International and Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport four times a week, according to a statement released Friday.

China Airlines, which has been operating out of Los Angeles International Airport since 1971, will be the first Asian airline to offer regular service to and from Ontario International. Flights will be increased to one a day during peak season, depending on demand, according to the statement.

“[This] is a monumental step in Ontario International’s evolution toward becoming just the second trans-oceanic gateway airport in the history of Southern California,” said Alan D. Wapner, president of the Ontario International Airport Authority and Ontario’s Mayor pro Tem, in the statement. “Equally impressive is that [this] occurred within a year of the airport’s transition to local control.”

The China-Ontario flights are expected to carry more than 80,000 passengers every year, according to the statement.
