Civil rights activist to speak at CSUSB

Dolores Huerta, longtime California labor leader and civil rights activist, is scheduled to speak March 7 at Cal State San Bernardino.

“Si Se Puede: A Dialogue With Dolores Huerta,” will be hosted by Cal State San Bernardino Associated Students. Admission is free, and the event will begin at  6 p.m. at Santos Manuel Student Union Events Center.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. No one will be admitted after Huerta begins her remarks.

Huerta, 87, began her civil rights work during the 1950s, when she helped found the Stockton chapter of the Community Service Organization. That group worked to improve the social and economic conditions of farm workers.

During the 1960s, Huerta created the Agricultural Workers Association, and she later co-founded the National Farm Workers Association with Cesar Chavez. Those two groups merged in 1965 and became the United Farm Workers.

In 2012, President Obama presented Huerta with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
