Discount retailer to unload stores

Dollar Tree, the popular discount chain, has announced that it plans to sell approximately 330 Family Dollar Stores.

The transaction, which was announced Monday, is being undertaken so that Dollar Tree can get approval of its $8.5 billion acquisition of Family Dollar Stores Inc. from the Federal Trade Commission, according to multiple reports.

Dollar Tree did not name possible buyers or say what stores might be sold.

After the transaction, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar combined would operate more than 13,000 U.S. stores, including multiple locations in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. It will remain the largest chain of dollar stores in the United States, the reports stated.

The acquisition is expected to close early next month.
