Fate of Golf Course to be Decided

Rancho Cucamonga’s Planning Commission is scheduled to get its first look Wednesday at a proposal to remove Empire Lakes Golf Course and replace it with mixed-use development.

Lewis Group of Cos. in Upland is buying the facility and will close it May 31, said Randall Lewis, the company’s executive vice president.

Plans call for the development of a non-gated community that will have an urban feel and will appeal to millennials. Lewis Group hopes to build houses that will he priced at $400,000 and below, Lewis said.

“There’s a great demand in that market for that price point, if you can get there,” Lewis said.

Empire Lakes was designed by golf icon Arnold Palmer. It’s located on 160 acres at 11015 Sixth St., just west of Milliken Avenue and east of Cleveland Avenue.

The planning commission meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Rancho Cucamonga Civic Center Council Chamber, 10500 Civic Center Drive.
