Fontana pushes home improvement program

Fontana is looking for applicants for its housing rehabilitation program.

The program offers grants and deferred loans that can be used to restore single-family, owner-occupied residences, according to a statement.

To be eligible, an applicant must have a yearly household income that does not exceed income limits set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Also, the property in question must be a primary residence, and it must be owned by the person applying for the loan.

A one-time grant of $5,000 is available to low and moderate-income property owners, as well as to people 62 years old and older whose income doesn’t exceed 50 percent of their area’s median income.

Loans up to $20,000 are also available to certain homeowners.

Possible renovations include, but are not limited to, health and safety upgrades, paint and stucco, new restroom fixtures, fixing code violations and work that improves energy efficiency, according to the statement.
