Inland region has a new largest school district

One hundred and twenty eight years after it started, the Corona-Norco Unified School District can for the first time boast of the largest enrollment of any district in the Inland Empire.

For years the district has trailed the San Bernardino City Unified District, but no longer: Corona Norco has 53,655 students enrolled for the current academic year, while San Bernardino City has an enrollment of 50,192 pupils, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.

The growth of Eastvale, the young city north of Norco, is being cited as one reason for the change in enrollment. The town’s population soared nearly 800 percent between 2000 and 2010, and its population for 2015 is expected to top 55,000, according to the report, which cited data from the California Department of Education.

Eight of the 48 schools in Corona-Norco are in Eastvale.

Officials with the San Bernardino City District cited demographics – particularly the city’s large number of renters, who are able to move more freely and quickly than homeowners – for the changes, the report stated.
