Major chain opens fulfillment center

Home Depot has opened an 850,000-square-foot fulfillment center in Perris.

The building, at 350 W. Markham St., will ship goods 24 hours a day, seven days a week up down the west coast, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.

Fulfillment centers are designed ship goods ordered online, usually to the residence of the person who ordered them on the same day the order was placed. Orders can also be shipped to the nearest store for pick up.

The center will employ 150 people to start with but will eventually expand to 300. The building can be expanded to more than 1.3 million square feet, according to the report.

Home Depot is based in Atlanta. It operates more than 2,200 stores nationwide and is the nation’s largest home-improvement retail, with sales of nearly $80 billion during fiscal 2013.

The company will maintain its fulfillment center in Ontario, which is not as automated at the Perris facility, the report stated.
