On The Move

Mike Moore began work Tuesday as Riverside’s new fire chief.

Moore, the city’s first African-American fire chief, started his tenure with a swearing-in badge-pinning ceremony at the Fox Performing Arts Center that was attended by about 350 people, according to a statement.

Moore replaces Interim Chief Mike Esparza, who ran the department for the past eight months following the retirement of Chief Steve Earley.

“I pride myself on the relationships I build with people and the bonds that I form during the pursuit of excellence,” Moore said in a statement. “I am thrilled to be able to bring that approach and that commitment to the city of Riverside.”

Before coming to Riverside, Moore worked as fire division chief with the Orange County Fire Authority, where he started his career as a firefighter/paramedic in 1982, according to the statement.
