Perris lands fulfillment center

Home Depot will open a 900,000-square-foot fulfillment center in Perris.

The project, which is expected to be up and running later this year, could employ up to 300 people, according to a report first published in The Press-Enterprise.

The fulfillment center, which will be at Markham Street and Perris Boulevard near Moreno Valley, is part of Home Depot’s strategy to place greater emphasis on e-commerce.

The Atlanta-based retail giant is reportedly spending $300 million to meet that goal, according to the report.

Fulfillment centers, which were pioneered by Amazon.com, are designed to deliver goods ordered online the day the order is placed.

The Moreno Valley facility will employ about 125 people to begin with but is expected to grow quickly from there. It could end up being the largest sales-tax generator in Moreno Valley, according to the report.

Home Depot sells home improvement and construction products and is the largest home-improvement retailer in the United States based on revenue reported to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Its warehouse-like stores average about 105,000 square feet, according to the company’s Web site.
