Pomona doesn’t mind Walmart

Walmart is going into Pomona with a whimper, not a bang.

A Walmart Neighborhood Market will be built in an empty storefront at the Valley Shopping Center at Arrow Highway and Towne Avenue, according to a report in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.

Walmart Neighborhood Market’s sell only groceries and covers about 40,000 square feet, considerably less than one of the chain’s regular-sized stores.

A proposed store in La Verne has prompted protests from some city residents who are concerned that the store at Foothill Boulevard and Wheeler Avenue might disrupt their neighborhoods.

The city council is scheduled to vote on the matter Wednesday at a meeting at the La Verne Community Center, a venue chosen to handle an expected overflow crowd.

Meanwhile, the Pomona store appears to be flying under the radar.

The location is zoned for retail use, no conditional use permits have been requested and the store is under construction with no public protests attached to it, according to the report.
