Riverside, UC Riverside to Promote Hiring Disabled

Riverside, UC Riverside and the California Department of Rehabilitation have joined to help promote National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

All three organizations will promote three events next month that will emphasize the benefits of hiring employees with disabilities and celebrating their contributions to the workplace, according to a statement released Monday by the university.

The events include:

  • “A Piece of My Mind,” a one-man show by Eric Barr, a UCR professor emeritus who survived a major stroke. Barr will perform at 7 p.m. Oct. 1 at the school’s University Theater
  • “Walk and Roll,” in which faculty – including Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox – students, staff and local community members will take a walk around the campus.  Information booths will be positioned along the way. That  event will begin at 11:45 a.m. Oct. 7 at the flagpole near Hinderaker Hall
  • A “windmills” workshop, which will consist of disability, sensitivity and awareness training, will be offered by the university and the department of rehabilitation. The workshop, which is meant to help anyone who wants to interact more effectively with disabled persons, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Highlander Union Building

Admission to all three events is free but a reservation is required. For more information visit http://hr.ucr.edu/ndeam.html.
