SB County names new CEO

San Bernardino County has a new chief executive officer.

Leonard X. Hernandez, who began working for the county 20 years ago, is scheduled to begin his new position Oct. 10, according to a statement on the county’s website.

“I am humbled by the confidence the Board of Supervisors has placed in me and grateful for the opportunity to lead this great county organization, which has been my professional home for so many years,” Hernandez said in the statement.

Hernandez follows Gary McBride, who will become the county’s strategic projects director. The board of supervisors approved both moves Tuesday.

“We are excited to welcome Leonard Hernandez as San Bernardino County’s new CEO,” said board Chairman Curt Hagman in the statement. “COVID-19 has presented many challenges within our community, and Leonard’s extensive experience within the county and his integral role on the executive leadership team have strongly positioned him to lead the county during this time.”

Hernandez was Riverside’s director of libraries, then moved to San Bernardino County in 2010, after being named the county’s librarian.

In 2016, he was named the county’s interim chief operating officer. One year later, the interim tag was removed.

In that role, Hernandez has helped coordinate the county’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the statement.
