Tune in to The Main Event this Saturday Morning at 9:30 on AM590

Tune in to The Main Event this Saturday morning at 9:30 on AM590 with host Ed Hoffman as he discusses national current events and politics, with a few mortgage tips along the way. Ed delivers intelligent, entertaining radio that makes hard news easy to understand!

This week, everyone’s talking about the Iowa Caucus results and the surprising controversies that emerged from it. On the Republican side, Ted Cruz was the winner with 27.6% of the vote – and even though the winner of the Iowa Caucus rarely goes on to win the party’s nomination, Cruz acted like he had just won the presidency. Ed has some fun with a clip from Cruz’s speech that reminds him of a gospel church sermon. “All he needed was a little Patti LaBelle in the background,” Ed says of Cruz’s grandiose preacher tone. “He’s acting like he just got anointed…it’s just Iowa, man.” If you don’t mind poking fun at the Republican candidates (even if you support them), tune in to this week’s show! Ed, a passionate conservative, has a great time laughing at both Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio this week and isn’t afraid to criticize.

What controversy emerged from the Caucus? It was the allegation that Cruz engaged in dirty politics, which resulted in votes being taken away from Dr. Ben Carson – and as a result, Carson came in a dismal fourth place. If you’ve heard some of this but need a recap, Ed can bring you up to speed on everything from Carson’s decision not to campaign in New Hampshire and South Carolina, to the misleading tweet sent by the Cruz campaign that caused Iowa Caucusers to believe Carson was dropping out of the race. “When you blast out a tweet like that, what are people supposed to think?” Ed says. He agrees with an attorney who has said Carson has cause to sue Cruz for disseminating information that was “recklessly unconfirmed.” “Carson can’t go back and redo the election,” Ed says. “Iowa is important for them to show that they’re succeeding.”

But that wasn’t Cruz’s only dirty trick this week; Ed also talks about the deceptive campaign mailer Cruz sent out to Iowa voters prior to the caucus. As a seasoned mortgage lender, Ed compares it to deceptive reverse mortgage ads sent out by some companies. “People are being deceptive out there, and I just don’t think it’s a good thing,” he says.

In the second half, Ed continues the discussion with audio from Donald Trump on the Cruz campaign and brings it back around to Cruz’s eligibility based on his birthplace. “Somebody needs to make clarification what a natural-born citizen is,” he says. Next week, Ed will bring in two constitutional law experts to debate the matter; put that show on your calendar now!

Then it’s on to Rubio, who gave his own version of a victory speech despite coming in third in the Caucus. “I have never heard anything that optimistic out of Rubio,” Ed says. “How can they say he’s too optimistic, and Carly Fiorina is ‘mad’?” Finally, someone else is saying what Ed has been saying for months: that Rubio sounds far too scripted and relies on his stump speech rather than answering direct questions. Who’s saying it? Chris Christie. “If that’s him,” Ed says of Rubio, “I’m okay with what he’s saying…but either he’s a cyborg, or somebody else wrote those words for him. That’s my problem with Marco.”

On this week’s show, you’ll also hear:

  • The problem with the Baltimore mosque the President chose to visit this week – could it be that it was once in hot water with the FBI because one of its members was plotting a terror attack?
  • What Bible verse Obama exploited during the National Prayer Breakfast in order to lecture Christians about Islamophobia
  • How we can be sure that speech was really a lecture to Christians – and what he really means when he says “some sinister other”

Ed wraps up this week’s show with a clip from the movie “Chasing Mavericks,” which uses to encourage listeners. “Teach your kids, talk to your fellow employees,” he says. “Not to make them panic, but to help them understand what’s going on.”
