Union may strike UC health care facilities

Members of the union that represents doctors and dentists at University of California health care clinics are scheduled to walk off the job today at several campuses, including UC Riverside.

The planned four-day strike by the Union of American Physicians and Dentists is meant to call attention to alleged unfair labor practices in the UC system, including discrepancies with pension contributions and a refusal by UC officials to provide financial information to the union, according to multiple reports.

Contingency plans are in place if there is a strike. The last time union members threatened to walk off the job, in January, they did not strike.

University of California officials, who have negotiated with the union since it formed two years ago, disputed its allegations and urged union members to stay on the job.

“We are disappointed that the union has chosen to stage strikes for the second time in three months instead of negotiating to resolve the remaining issues,” said Dwaine B. Duckett, the UC system’s vice president of Human Resources, in a statement.

The strike is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. Saturday and last until 7 a.m. Wednesday. UCLA, UC Irvine, UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara might also be affected by the strike, according to the reports.
