California added 67,000 non-agricultural jobs in April, enough to account for about one-fourth of the jobs created nationwide that month, according to data released Friday.
Despite that increase, the state’s unemployment rate was up slightly month-over-month, from 4.4 percent in March to 4.5 percent, the state Employment Development Department reported.
As of April, California has recovered all of the jobs lost in March and April 2020, when the pandemic started.
There are now 365,400 more people employed in California than were in February 2020, according to Beacon Economics in Los Angeles, which publishes an analysis of the EDD’s job report on the day the jobs report is published.
Health care added the most jobs statewide in April, 18,200, followed by leisure and hospitality, which grew by 13,100 jobs.
“Despite all the talk of tech-sector lay-offs, the state’s economy has had a strong start to the year, adding jobs at a quicker rate than the nation as a whole,” said Taner Osman, research manager for Beacon, in a statement.
The U.S. unemployment rate in April was 3.4 percent.
Riverside and San Bernardino counties recorded 4.1 percent unemployment rates in April. Those numbers were not seasonally adjusted, according to the EDD.
