Property owners in San Bernardino County whose property was damaged by Tropical Storm Hilary may be eligible for a property tax reduction.
A claim must be filed with the Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk’s office no later than one year after the damage occurred, according to a statement on the county’s website.
Once a claim is filed, the office will reassess the damaged property, and property taxes may be reduced temporarily until repairs are finished.
To qualify, damage must be at least $10,000 of the property’s current market value.
“I encourage all homeowners whose property was damaged by Tropical Storm Hilary to contact our office,” said Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk Chris Wilhite in the statement. “Property owners may also qualify for property tax relief due to other non-declared emergency events that damaged their home, such as mudslides or fires.”
Property tax relief is available to owners of real property, business equipment and fixtures. So far, the Assessor-Recorder-Clerk’s office has contacted over 70 property owners who reported damage caused by Tropical Storm Hilary, which struck California in August, according to the statement.
