Amazon.com is coming to Redlands

Amazon.com Inc., the online retail giant, will open its fifth California fulfillment center in Redlands, creating 2,500 full-time jobs.

The company announced Thursday that it will occupy a 700,000-square-foot building at 2125 W. San Bernardino Ave. That structure is north of Interstate 10 and west of the Foothill Freeway, in a part of the city zoned for industrial use.

An opening date was not released.

Amazon’s other California fulfillment centers are in San Bernardino, Moreno Valley, Patterson and Tracy. A fulfillment center is designed to deliver goods purchased online to the consumer on the day they’re ordered.

Once the Redlands facility is up and running, Amazon will have more than five million square feet of fulfillment center space in the state. The company has 100 warehouses and nearly 50 million square feet of fulfillment center space worldwide, according to a company statement.

“We have found great talent in the state, and we’re excited to be growing quickly to serve our customers,” said Mike Roth, Amazon’s vice president of North America operations, in a statement.

Jobs at the Redlands facility will pay wages 30 percent higher than traditional retail stores and will immediately include comprehensive benefits, bonuses and stock awards, Roth said in the statement.
