Dr. Michael A. Sequeira will retire as San Bernardino County’s health officer.
Sequeira, who joined the county health department in 2020, took a lead role in the county’s response to COVID-19 and the fentanyl crisis, according to a statement on the county’s website.
He is scheduled to step down Nov. 20.
“Dr. Sequeira’s leadership of the Department of Public Health has been invaluable,” said Dawn Rowe, chair of the board of supervisors, in the statement. “We thank him for his unwavering dedication during such challenging times.”
During his 30-year career, Sequeira has worked at the local and state levels, including regional director of six of the county’s hospital emergency departments.He was also president of the San Bernardino County Medical Society and a member of the steering committee of the Inland Empire Opioid Crisis Coalition, according to the statement.
