New Zoo in Big Bear

A groundbreaking ceremony will held in Big Bear Lake Friday to mark the pending move of the Big Bear Alpine Zoo at Moonridge.

The facility, which houses rescue animals, will move a short distance down the road from its current location at 43285 Goldmine Drive, said Sandra Maravilla, communications director for San Bernardino County Supervisor James Ramos.

The new facility will cover about 270,000 square feet, well over twice the size of the current facility, which has been in business since 1959.

Ramos helped lead the effort to find a larger location for the zoo shortly after he took office four years ago, Maravilla said.

The zoo contains about 80 species and 160 animals, including wolves, snow leopards, grizzly bears and mountain lions, according to the facility’s website. The move is expected to be completed by the fall of 2018.
