Dawn J. Wright, a scientist with Esri in Redlands, has been named a 2016 fellow of the Geological Society of America.

The society “recognizes its fellows for their distinguished contributions to the geosciences through research, teaching and enhancing the public’s awareness of geology,” according to a statement.

For the past 20 years, Wright has worked to expand the use of geographic information system technology (GIS) to study terrain, ecosystem and habitats. Wright was acknowledged for her work on mapping the ocean floor and for helping adapt GIS technology to the ocean.

Besides being a chief scientist at Esri, Wright is also a professor of geography and oceanography at Oregon St. University and serves on several national science advisory boards, according to the statement.
