Aldi makes donation

Aldi, the European-based discount supermarket chain that began opening stores in Southern California last year, has donated $100,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs of America, including several chapters in the Inland Empire.

The Boys & Girls Club of Menifee, Southwest [Riverside] County, Greater Redlands and Greater Redlands-Riverside all will receive funding intended to promote a healthy lifestyle, according to a statement released Tuesday.

In all, 36 Boys & Girls Clubs in Southern California will receive funding, which they can use to develop their own programs.

Based in Germany, Aldi maintains its U.S. headquarters in Batavia, Ill. The chain, which claims it can cut the typical household’s grocery bill by up to 50 percent, sells grocery and household items mainly under its own brand.

In the United States, Aldi operates more than 1,600 stores in 35 states, according to the statement.
