A bill that would restore millions of dollars to the four newest cities in Riverside County has passed a state Senate committee.
In a unanimous and bipartisan vote, the Committee on Government and Finance on Wednesday passed the bill sponsored by Sen. Richard Roth, D-Riverside, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.
Roth’s bill would return revenue from vehicle license fees to Wildomar, Eastvale, Menifee and Jurupa Valley. However, it’s not certain that Gov. Jerry Brown will sign the bill even if it’s passed by the Senate and Assembly.
All four cities have incorporated within the last decade. In 2011, they lost a combined $19 million because of the legislature’s decision to shift that revenue away from cities and into law enforcement grants.
Jurupa Valley, which incorporated in 2011, was hit particularly hard by that move. Officials there have warned that the city might be forced to disincorporate if it doesn’t receive vehicle license fee revenue.
The bill will now go to the Senate appropriations committee, the report stated.
