Gov. Brown is expected to propose that funds from the state’s estimated $3 billion surplus be spent on public schools and community colleges.
However, Democrats are expected to try to spend much of that money on various social programs, including child care and higher education, according to an Associated Press report.
Brown is scheduled to release his updated budget proposal later this week. He is also expected to ask that more be set aside for so-called “rainy day” funds.
The governor has already proposed a record $113 billion general fund spending plan, but he has revised that upward as the surplus has grown, the report stated.
