San Bernardino is scheduled to hold a ceremony on April 24 to mark the demolition of the Carousel Mall.
The former shopping center, which covers 43 acres downtown and is surrounded by a fence, will be leveled “systematically” during the coming weeks, according to a statement on the city website.
Mayor Helen Tran, Councilman Theodore Sanchez, and other city officials are expected to attend. The city-owned mall is in San Bernardino’s first ward, which Sanchez represents.
“The demolition of the mall marks a milestone in the redevelopment of the site, which is envisioned to include several thousand housing units, along with commercial and office buildings,” the statement reads.
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and is open to the public. Parking will be on G Street between Second and Third Streets.
The event will include a ceremonial demolition using jackhammers.
The two-story mall opened in 1972 as Central City Mall. It was renamed in 1991 when a carousel was installed on its lower level, and closed in the summer of 2017 after years of dwindling attendance, lost tenants and gradual disrepair.
I think it’s ridiculous to level the mall I think it’s a huge waste of money & time I think seriously it should be refurbished & get new tenants in there I do otherwise it’s gonna get run down again by homelessness… Trash I think strongly it should be refurbished… Such a waste to demolish it such great history from this Mall…
