Jurupa Valley residents are being asked to urge Gov. Jerry Brown to sign a Senate bill that would restore an estimated $5.5 million in state funding to the city.
The money was diverted from Jurupa Valley in 2011, the year the community incorporated, according to a statement on the city’s website.
That funding, which Jurupa Valley needs in order to provide basic services, was shifted to the state’s prison realignment program. If passed, SB 817 would restore that funding – which came from vehicle license fees – to cities.
A link to a five-paragraph sample letter is included in the statement, which was posted online Tuesday.
“Given the disproportionate impact of this lost revenue on Jurupa Valley, my city has been forced to decimate funding for public safety, crippling my city’s ability to adequately address crime and other public safety issues,” the letter reads.
Jurupa Valley officials could not be reached for comment.
