Cal State University San Bernardino receives grant money

Community center to get major overhaul

Riverside has received $25 million in state funds that it will use to renovate the César Chávez Community Center at Bobby Bonds Park.

The city council on April 4 voted unanimously to accept the state funding, which was part of last year’s state budget, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Construction is expected to start in December 2024 and be completed in the spring of 2026.

The 95-year-old building’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system will be replaced, along with electrical, plumbing, roofing, and other building systems.

Lead and asbestos will also be removed, and the building and adjacent structures will be made to comply with the current building and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Also, broadband internet will be installed, and rooms and floor plans will be reconfigured to support the non-profit Riverside Arts Academy, which uses the community center for classes and performances.

“This project will transform the center as a gathering place for our community, including students of the Riverside Arts Academy,” Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson said in the statement.

  1. Kudos! I hope this will not feed into the gentrification of the area.
What will be done about the homeless and mentally ill that live and or spend time on that property.
