Cal State San Bernardino has received $10 million from the state that it will use to help reduce the shortage of healthcare professionals in the Inland region.
Once established, the Master of Science Physician Assistant Program will be the first of its kind at a public university in Southern California, according to a statement on Cal State San Bernardino’s website.
“Our region has long suffered a shortage of healthcare professionals that was exacerbated by the pandemic,” said state Sen. Richard Roth, D-Riverside, in the statement. “This shortage was not the result of a lack of interest in the profession, but by a bottleneck in the education system that failed to develop slots for waiting students.
“Cal State San Bernardino has stepped up to the plate to address this crisis.”
Roth pushed for getting the $10 million included in the 2022-2023 fiscal year budget, which Gov, Gavin Newsom signed last month.
The program is expected to start in the fall of 2024 with 30 students and grow to a maximum of 85 students within three years, according to the statement.
