Democratic Party ups its profile

Democrats are beginning to make up ground in Riverside County.

Since 2011, Democrats have reached voter pluralities in Riverside, San Jacinto and Cathedral City, three places where it has traditionally trailed the Republicans in registered voters, according to report in The Press-Enterprise.

The GOP still leads in overall registered voters in Riverside County – about 346,000 – compared with 313,000 registered Democrats.

The Republican Party has the majority of voters in 18 of the region’s 28 cities, including Menifee, Jurupa Valley and Wildomar. All of those communities incorporated within the last decade.

Statewide, the picture is a little different.

The number of unaffiliated voters in California has grown 2.7 percent during the past two years, while the number of registered Republicans and Democrats fell 0.9 percent and 0.7 percent respectively during that time, according to the report, which cited data released by the California Secretary of State’s office.

California has 7.6 million registered Democrats, nearly five million registered Republicans and 4.1 million independent voters, the report stated.
