Eastvale hopes cameras will reduce shopping center crime

Eastvale has set up a grant program designed to reduce crime in the city’s shopping centers.

The License Plate Recognition Camera Grant Program will reimburse grant recipients up to 25 percent of the first-year cost of operating a license plate recognition camera, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Those cameras detect only license plates and vehicle characteristics, not human traits. They alert law enforcement when a stolen car or known suspect from a state or national crime database is detected. They also send alerts if a vehicle associated with a missing person in an AMBER or Silver Alert is discovered.

“With the Shopping Center License Plate Recognition Camera Grant Program, we’re giving law enforcement the tools they need to prevent crime and keep Eastvale safe,” Mayor Christian Dino said in the statement.

The cameras are made by Flock Safety, an Atlanta-based company that specializes in public safety technology. Its cameras are used in more than 5,000 communities, and the company works with more 3,000 law enforcement agencies nationwide, including the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, according to the statement.
