Cal State University San Bernardino receives grant money

Federal grant will help Fontana improve transit safety

Fontana has received $2 million in federal aid that it will use to make transportation safety improvements.

The funding from the Department of Transportation will help reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries by developing smart traffic signal technology, according to a statement released by Rep. Norma Torres, D-Ontario.

Torres is a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation which oversees government funding for transportation and other infrastructure projects.

“Our communities deserve safe, high-quality transportation infrastructure that ensures the safe and efficient transport of passengers and freight cargo while mitigating climate impacts,” Torres said in the statement “This grant means less waiting at train signal crossings, and better coordination between passenger and cargo trains.”

In October, Torres introduced the Pedestrian Hazard, Awareness and Safety Expansion Act, which addresses the recent increase pedestrian injuries and deaths in communities like the Inland Empire.
