Author Reyna Grande will deliver the commencement address at Chaffey College’s 107th graduation ceremony.
About 2,500 students will receive degrees and certificates during the ceremony, which will be held May 16 at Toyota Arena in Ontario, according to a statement.
Grande, a nine-year old undocumented immigrant when she came to the United States in 1984, writes about immigration and family separation. A native of Guerrero, Mexico, she is a recipient of the American Book Award, the El Premio Aztlán Literary Award and the International Latino Book Award.
Her 2012 book, The Distance Between Us, a look back at her childhood in Mexico and the United States, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.
“Reyna Grande’s story shows us that courage, perseverance, and determination can lead to a life of prosperity,” said Henry D. Shannon, Chaffey College’s president/superintendent, in the statement.
