Health workers stage protest

Healthcare workers walked off the job at Kaiser Permanente’s Fontana Medical Center Monday.

The protesters, all members of the National Union of Healthcare Workers, began marching at 6 a.m., according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.

About 70 people were walking the picket line yesterday morning, and the protest was expected to last until 4 p.m. All were seeking higher levels of staffing for their patients, the report stated.

Kaiser Permanente agreed in September to pay a $4 million penalty levied by the state Department of Managed Health Care, which reported problems in the company’s mental health coverage following a survey conducted in 2012.

Kaiser Permanente officials have denied providing insufficient care to its mental health patients and say they have increased their number of therapists by 25 percent throughout the state, according to the report.

The protest is expected to return to Fontana Thursday and move to Kaiser Permanente Riverside on Friday, the report stated.
