Construction has begun on Mary’s Village in San Bernardino, a transitional housing complex for homeless men.
Officials from Mary’s Mercy Center, San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, San Bernardino County and the city of San Bernardino broke ground on the project Wednesday, according to a statement.
“In our early years, the Catholic church helped provide food and basic needs to our tribe,” said Ken Ramirez, San Manuel secretary, in the statement. “It is an honor to continue our longstanding partnership with Mary’s Mercy Center to establish Mary’s Village, which will provide those same basic needs to the homeless male population in San Bernardino.”
During the ceremony, members of the tribe’s business committee presented a $7.3 million check to Mary’s Mercy Center leadership for the construction of the project, which will be the first of its kind San Bernardino.
The groundbreaking was for the first two phases of the four-phase project, which will be at 256 S. Artesian Ave.
Mary’s Village will serve approximately 100 homeless men in the central San Bernardino area and will provide housing, vocational education and job training, among other services, according to the statement.
