More than 1,120 healthcare workers at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center have voted to join SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West, the largest such action undertaken at a California hospital in nearly 15 years.
The vote was held in January, but the election result was not certified last week after the National Labor Relations Board turned down a prolonged challenge by hospital executives, according to a statement.
The workers at Pomona Valley Hospital licensed include vocational nurses, pharmacy technicians, physical therapy aides, surgery technicians, food service workers, secretaries, janitors and receptionists.
This the largest hospital union action in California since the fall of 2001, when 1,300 healthcare workers at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center voted to join a union. Since April of last year, more than 3,300 hospital workers have voted to join SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West.
