Local manufacturing up

Manufacturing in the Inland Empire is apparently back on track.

The region’s purchasing managers index was 54.5 during December, four and half points above the benchmark for an expanding manufacturing sector.

Most important, December was the third consecutive month that the index was 50 or above. Three consecutive months in either direction is considered a trend, so it’s official: manufacturing in Riverside and San Bernardino counties is in growth mode.

Seventy one percent of the purchasing managers surveyed last month said they expect the economy to stay the same during the next three months, 21 percent indicated they expect it to improve.

Only seven percent said they expect the economy to get worse during that time, according to the index, which is produced monthly by the Institute of Applied Research and Policy Analysis at Cal State San Bernardino.
