Moreno Valley receives grant from retail giant

Amazon has donated $100,000 to MoVaLEARNS, the latest phase of Moreno Valley’s Hire MoVal program.

City officials accepted the donation at Tuesday’s regularly scheduled city council meeting, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Now in its third year, MoVaLEARNS helps adults who have to work and go to school at the same time. It has helped 50 Moreno Valley residents enrolled in career and technical education classes at Moreno Valley College, who are eligible to receive a monthly stipend for an academic semester at the school.

“Amazon is incredibly proud to partner with Moreno Valley and MoVaLEARNS to make higher education more accessible and affordable,” said Marie Lloyd, head of community engagement for Amazon in Southern California, in the statement. “At Amazon, we believe in lifelong learning, which is why we pay for our frontline employees — all 750,000 — to get their high school diplomas, GEDs, ESL proficiencies and to attend college.”
