Moreno Valley to hold census seminar

Moreno Valley will host a hiring and education seminar next month regarding the 2020 U.S. Census.

The session, scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 1 at the city’s Conference & Recreation Center, is open to residents interested in working for, or learning about, the census, according a statement on the city’s website.

Attendees will learn why it’s important to participate in the census, regardless of one’s immigration status. They may also apply for local, temporary work with the census, which is scheduled to be conducted in April.

“Many people without legal immigration status fear that taking part in the Census will make it harder for them to stay in the United States,” Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez said in the statement. “We want them to know that there are no questions on the census about citizenship or immigration status, and that census workers are sworn to secrecy for life to protect people’s private information.”

Census data helps determine how much federal aid a region can receive and how many representatives a state has in Congress.  The Census Bureau expects to hire as many as 500,000 temporary workers nationwide, with pay ranging from $16.50 to $17 per hour.

The conference and recreation center is at 14075 Frederick St., next door to city hall.
