Moreno Valley is one of 35 cities named to the finals of The U.S. Mayor’s Challenge, a national competition sponsored by Bloomberg Philanthropies to promote good government.
City officials will participate in a six-month “test phase,” during which they will develop programs designed to solve some of Moreno Valley’s most pressing problems, according to a statement released Wednesday.
Moreno Valley is one of four California cities that will participate in the competition, along with Los Angeles, Vallejo and Elk Grove. All participating cities will receive up to $100,000 from the charitable organization to help develop their ideas.
A second round of applications will be submitted in August. In October, four cities will receive $1 million grants, and one will get $5 million, to put their programs into practice.
More than 320 cities submitted applications at the start of the competition.
The Mayor’s Challenge program began in the United States in 2013. The following year it was held in Europe and in 2016 it was conducted in Latin America and the Caribbean, according to the statement.
