Two members of the Inland Empire’s Native American community will be recognized for their work advancing tribal interests.
Mary Ann Andreas, tribal vice chairwoman for the Morongo Band of Mission Indians, and James Ramos, San Bernardino County’s Third District supervisor and the immediate past chairman of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, will he honored at the upcoming 11th annual Dragonfly Gala, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.
The event, scheduled to be held Aug. 9 at the Morongo Community Center, benefits the Dorothy Ramon Learning Center in Banning.
Both recipients are being honored for their years of leadership inside their tribal communities as well as in the Inland region at large, according to the report.
Andreas has served on the Morongo tribal council for more than 30 years, including two terms as tribal chairwoman. She helped lead the effort to secure gaming rights for all California tribes.
Ramos is the first Native American to serve on the San Bernardino Community College Board of Trustees. He is currently chairman of the California State Native American Heritage Commission, having first been appointed to that body in 2008 by Gov. Jerry Brown, according to the report.
