Omnitrans brings back summer youth discount

For the third consecutive year, the largest public transit agency in San Bernardino County will offer a $1 summer discount fare to anyone 18 years old or younger.

The program, which is scheduled to begin Saturday and last through Aug. 31, is a 75 cent discount  from the transit agency’s regular single-ride rate, according to a statement on Omnitrans’ website.

Young riders may pay cash after boarding or pay in advance by phone using the token transit mobile app. That app is free and can be accessed by texting TOKEN to 41411.

“Summer is a great time to get out and explore,” said Omnitrans spokesperson Wendy Williams in the statement “We hope the discounted summer youth fare will make it more affordable for youth and families to get to the community pool, a skate park, the library, a mall or the movies.”

More than 39,000 $1 trips were recorded in June and July of 2017 when the Summer Youth Fare was first offered. Last year that number rose to nearly 50,000.

This is the first year the program will be extended into August, according to the statement.
