Omnitrans has begun operating its first four all-electric buses, starting a new era for the largest transit agency in San Bernardino County.
“Since we introduced the nation’s first hybrid-electric transit bus in 2002, Omnitrans has prioritized enhancing air quality in our region,” said Erin Rogers, Omnitrans’ chief executive officer, and general manager, in a statement. “Operating our first zero-emissions vehicles is a step toward meeting our state’s clean air goals.”
More than 50 percent of Omnitrans’ buses operate on near-zero emission engines. Electric engines produce no emissions.
The new zero-emissions buses have a range of about 150 miles and take about four hours to charge. Each costs $1.1 million.
By 2040, the agency’s entire fleet will be transitioned to zero-emissions buses to comply with state regulations, according to the statement.
