Capt. Shelly Vander Veen has been named Claremont’s chief of police.
Vander Veen, a Chino native, took over as the city’s top law enforcement official Wednesday, according to a statement on the city’s website.
A 23-year department veteran, Vander Veen is replacing Chief Paul Cooper, who is retiring.
Vander Veen began her law enforcement career in 1993 as a reserve officer and was soon promoted to a full-time position.
She then moved up to corporal and spent three years working in the detective bureau. Eventually, Vander Veen was promoted to sergeant and then to lieutenant, working as a field supervisor and overseeing the department’s detective bureau.
Vander Veen was promoted to captain in 2014.
A badge ceremony was held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Doubletree by Hilton.
