The committee is responsible for helping cities throughout the region develop policies that promote “sustainability, transparency and innovation,” according to a statement on the city’s website.

“Having served on several SCAG committees over the years, and as an educator and entrepreneur, I understand the importance of data driven decision making and how open data/ big data can drive sustainable policies,” Giba said in the statement. “I am humbled and honored to serve my community and the region and help further this important mission.”

SCAG is the nation’s largest metropolitan planning organization, having six counties, 191 cities and more than 18 million residents in its jurisdiction. It specializes in policy and planing initiatives designed to improve quality of life in California.
