Rick Mayhew is retiring as Upland’s fire chief.
Mayhew, 54, is stepping down because of an unspecified medical condition, according to a report in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.
Mayhew’s last day on the job is scheduled for July 18. Deputy Fire Chief Dave Corbin will serve as interim chief until a replacement is named, the report stated.
Mayhew took over as head of the department in February 2013. He was a prime mover behind a pilot program that merged the command staffs of the Montclair and Upland fire departments.
The two-year program is scheduled to end this December, but Mayhew has said the plan is to keep the program in place.
The city is accepting applications to find Mayhew’s replacement. A new chief could be found by September, according to the report.
