G. Richard Olds has resigned as dean of UC Riverside’s medical school.
Olds, considered by many to have been the driving force in establishing the medical school, announced he is stepping down in a letter sent to school personnel and students, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.
His resignation is effective Aug. 31.
Olds’ resignation reportedly surprised many at UC Riverside, and his letter shed little light on his reasons for leaving. Olds was also vague on his future plans, other than saying it was time to move on to his next professional challenge, the report stated.
In the letter, Olds complimented the school’s staff and recounted the effort it took to get the medical school accredited.
Olds came to UC Riverside in 2010 with the goal of opening the medical school two years later. That plan was blocked because of a lack funding brought on by the state’s budget crisis.
