Ontario to use grant for “smart” downtown

Ontario has received a grant from the Southern California Association of Governments that will help make its downtown more high tech.

The grant, part of the association’s Future Communities Pilot Program, will pay for the installation of “smart city” applications downtown, including a hub where technology and data can be accessed by the public and private sector alike, according to a statement.

Ontario received one of the pilot program’s largest grants. That program is designed to give cities and counties the resources they need to cut emissions by reducing the number of vehicle miles traveled.

The hub will be located inside a city-owned building on Euclid Avenue. The building’s exact location was not disclosed. Some of the projects being evaluated are studying multimodal transportation patterns, creating affordable bike-share docking systems and finding more efficient ways to collect commercial refuse.

“We’re excited to be selected for this important pilot program and to put into motion our smart city vision for the downtown area,” said Ontario Mayor Paul S. Leon said in the statement. “Ontario is fast becoming a technology and innovation hub for the region, and this plan opens up a whole new world of opportunities for us.”
