Palm Springs has extended its temporary ban on COVID-19 related evictions.
The urgency ordinance, which the city council passed unanimously, means anyone who can’t pay their rent because they’ve been impacted by the pandemic is safe until at least July 31, according to a summary of the ordinance by the city attorney’s office.
“The situation is unprecedented and evolving rapidly,” the report states. “Further economic impacts are anticipated, leaving tenants vulnerable to eviction.”
The moratorium was most recently extended to June 30. The council is reassessing the moratorium every month.
Commercial tenants must tell their landlord they cannot pay their rent within seven days of the payment being due, while residential tenants have 15 days to provide such notification, according to the ordinance.
Landlords may ask for proof that the delinquent payment is COVID-19 related, but that information -medical or financial – is to remain confidential, according to the ordinance.
