Palm Springs International adds carrier

Sun Country Airlines will begin non-stop flights between Palm Springs International Airport and San Francisco.

The Minneapolis-based carrier will start twice-weekly flights between those two markets starting today, according to a statement released Monday.

The flights will operate on Monday and Friday, with one-way fares to start at $59.

“Palm Springs is delighted to welcome Sun Country Airlines to Palm Springs International Airport,” said Mary Jo Ginther, the city’s tourism director, in the statement. “Nonstop service between San Francisco and [Palm Springs International] is expected to be incredibly popular.”

Sun Country, which was founded in 1982 by former Braniff Airline pilots, flies primarily to leisure destinations in the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica and the Caribbean.

It will be the 12th commercial airline to operate from Palm Springs International, according to the airport’s website.
