Performing arts center opens

The San Manuel Performing Arts Center, a $10 million facility at Aquinas High School in San Bernardino, opened Thursday.

The building, which covers more than 16,000 square feet, includes a 336-seat auditorium, band rehearsal space, dressing rooms and areas for the design and building of sets, according to a statement.

Donations from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians in Highland, Shea Family Charities and the J.F. Shea Foundation helped build the project, which will be used by the school and local community.

“For many years, our theater and band students were limited to the shared space of the old gym, and our larger productions needed to be held at the Sturges Center for the Fine Arts downtown,” said Jim Brennan, Aquinas High School president, in the statement.

“Our mission is to give our students a quality education, which includes catering to the needs of all disciplines. We are thrilled to now have the means to support those who wish to pursue the arts.”

A grand opening carnival is scheduled to be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the school, located at 2772 Sterling Ave. Tours of the Performing Arts Center will be available to everyone in attendance.
