Project to help homeless people scheduled to open

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled to be held Thursday at Grove Village in Riverside, a four-unit housing development on the grounds of Grove Community Church designed to help local homeless people.

The project, believed to be the only one of its kind in the Inland region, is the result of a partnership between the church, Riverside and Tilden-Coil Constructors Inc. in Riverside, according to a statement on the city website.

The 600-square-foot structures will provide transitional housing for people trying to get out of homelessness and become self-sufficient. They will be built on property donated by the church.

Programs, including job training and placement, life skills, child care and financial planning will be provided along with the housing.

“We know that you cannot solve homelessness without housing, and this project is an amazing example of how a local government and a faith community can work together to provide that housing,” said Mayor Rusty Bailey, who helped bring the partnership together, in the statement. “We are immensely grateful to Pastor Tom Lance and The Grove family for showing us how faith communities can be integral in making progress on one the biggest issues of our time.”

Riverside is donating $120,000 from Measure Z, a one-cent transaction-and-use tax passed by voters in November 2016, to help pay for city programs and services that are seriously underfunded.

Rotary International District 5330 also donated $40,000 to help pay for Grove Village.

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20 at 19900 Grove Community Drive. Members of the media and the general public are encouraged to attend.
